National 4-H Technology Teams to Attend ESRI International Conference

SAN DIEGO, August 4, 2006 – 4-H Youth/Adult Technology Teams from 14 states will present their community mapping projects to geospatial professionals and educators from more than 90 countries at the Environmental Systems Research Institute (ESRI) international conference, August 7-9, in San Diego.
The 44 4-H youth and adult representatives, members of the National 4-H Geographic Information Systems and Global Positioning System (GIS GPS) Design Team, provide leadership in helping communities adopt new geospatial technologies. The teams will share their experiences in launching community mapping programs in 300 counties in 49 states.
ESRI offers GIS software grants to local 4-H clubs through a competitive process.
In addition to presenting at the ESRI conference, the team will get a behind-the-scenes tour of the San Diego Zoo Wildlife Park to learn how geospatial technology is used in managing the animals and facilities. Other activities include exhibiting in the educational area of the San Diego Convention Center, conducting several workshop presentations on youth community mapping and conducting a KIDSCAMP to instruct other youth on the uses of GPS technology.
Tom Tate, national program leader for the Cooperative State Research, Education, and Extension Service (CSREES) Economic and Community Systems Unit, and Jim Kahler, program specialist with the CSREES Families, 4-H, and Nutrition Unit, provide national leadership to the team.
