Giant pandas Tian Tian (front) and Mei Xiang spent their morning wrestling and playing in Washington D.C.’s first snow of the season at Smithsonian’s National Zoo, Thursday, Dec. 6. Giant pandas are native to central China where snow is common in the winter, allowing Tian Tian and Mei Xiang to feel right at home when snow starts to fall. Giant pandas are classified as endangered with an estimated 1,600 left in the wild.

Tai Shan, the giant panda cub at Smithsonian’s National Zoo digs into a special frozen treat he received on his first birthday, July 9, 2006. His mother Mei Xiang looks on before joining him. The frozen treat, prepared by National Zoo nutritionists, was made of bamboo leaves, carrots, pears, beets, apples and a touch of apple juice suspended in ice. Thousands of visitors came to the Zoo to celebrate the cub’s birthday. Tai Shan and both his parents live at the Fujifilm Giant Panda Habitat at the National Zoo.

The 12-week-old giant panda cub at the Smithsonian’s National Zoo is carried by Assistant Curator Lisa Stevens for a quick weight check this morning. The male cub, born July 9, now weighs 11.4 pounds. The cub and his parents live at the National Zoo’s Fujifilm Giant Panda Habitat.

The male giant panda cub at the Smithsonian’s National Zoo is strong and healthy, according to National Zoo veterinarians who examined the cub on Sept. 30. The cub now weighs 11 pounds and is 24.7 inches long. National Zoo staff felt a ridge of teeth while examining the cub's mouth, which indicates his molars are beginning to come in. The cub and his parents live at the Fujifilm Giant Panda Habitat at the National Zoo in Washington, D.C.

It’s a boy! The giant panda cub at National Zoo had his first health exam on Aug. 2, when National Zoo staff determined its gender, and checked its heart rate and weight. Weighing 1.82 pounds and measuring 12 inches long, the cub appears vigorous and healthy. It was quickly reunited with its mother, Mei Xiang. The cub, which was born on July 9, lives at the National Zoo’s Fujifilm Giant Panda Habitat with its mother and father, Tian Tian.
