The University of Kentucky’s Cooperative Extension forestry program is focused on effectively delivering knowledge, insight, and solutions that address forest and forest-industry-related challenges affecting the quality of life of all Kentuckians. The program develops and delivers educational and training programs and resources to enhance economic opportunities for individuals, businesses and communities while improving the stewardship and health of Kentucky’s forestlands and associated natural areas and resources.
So...what is Extension???? All universities engage in research and teaching, but the nation's more than 100 land-grant colleges and universities, have a third critical mission — Extension.
“Extension” means “reaching out,” and — along with teaching and research — land-grant institutions “extend” their resources, solving public needs with college or university resources through non-formal, non-credit programs. These programs are largely administered through thousands of county and regional extension offices. Congress created the extension system nearly a century ago to address exclusively rural, agricultural issues.
Today Extension continues to serve the rural areas, but is also heavily involved in urban areas and where ever people are.
Based in the University of Kentucky College of Agriculture, extension reaches millions of Kentucky residents each year with educational programs in agriculture and natural resources, family and consumer sciences, 4-H and youth development, and community and economic development.
