OIE Role and Approach

OIE efforts on key strategic objectives:

• provision of information on international disease situation;
• use of current scientific information on avian influenza, to develop and revise OIE's international standards and to address scientific and technical issues of prevention and control

• capacity building and support of Veterinary Services including laboratories all over the world

Good Governance

The Veterinary Services (VS) are the very core of the system for the prevention and control of animal disease and play a major role in every country as guarantors of animal health and in associated public health issues.

The OIE strives towards bringing VS into line with its international standards in terms of governance, organization and functioning to achieve effective VS capable of detecting animal disease outbreaks and responding rapidly to bring the disease under control.

Veterinary Services

The OIE has undertaken a number of initiatives to support Veterinary Services all over the world and several projects designed to support the Veterinary Services of developing countries to meet OIE international standards are in progress. The OIE is actively engaged in improving the capacity of national Veterinary Services' surveillance and information systems and has adopted new standards for the quality of national Veterinary Services.
