Outstanding Alumni Honored
Dr. Marvin N. Miller (BS, MS) received the
2005 Distinguished Horticulture Alumni Award from the Department of Horticulture
and Landscape Architecture at Purdue University. The award, which was presented
during Purdue’s Homecoming Weekend, is given annually to alumni who have
made notable contributions in their field. Ed Ashworth, Head of the Department
of Horticulture and Landscape Architecture noted that “the reputation
of an educational institution is a reflection of the successes of their alumni.
Dr. Marvin Miller has a distinguished career in the floriculture industry and
we are very proud that he is a graduate of our horticulture program at Purdue.” Marvin
joined the Ball Horticulture Company in 1983 and is presently the market research
manager for the Ball Company. His focus at Ball Horticulture involves studying
the changing structure, conduct and performance of the ornamental horticulture
industry. Marvin is a frequent author and speaker on topics important to the
North American floriculture industry. He also serves the industry through his
involvement in the Society of American Florists and his collaborations with
the U. S. Department of Agriculture’s National Agricultural Statistics
Service and its Economic Research Service.
Dr. Marvin Miller is a native of Baltimore, Maryland. He received a B.S. degree
in Horticulture and a M.S. degree in Agricultural Economics from Purdue University.
He received his Ph.D. in Food and Resource Economics from the University of
Florida.
Janice Cervelli Schach (BSLA '79) was among nine Purdue alumni receiving the 2003 Distinguished
Agricultural Alumni Award. Jan, who is currently Dean of the College of Architecture, Arts and Humanities
at Clemson University, was on campus last spring to receive the honor and meet with faculty and students.
After graduating from Purdue, Jan completed her MSLA at the University of Guelph. She then joined the Landscape
Architecture faculty at the University of Kentucky and subsequently rose through the academics ranks to become
Professor of Landscape Architecture and later Associate Dean of Undergraduate Studies. Jan has held leadership
roles in both the American Society for Landscape Architecture (ASLA) and the Council of Educators in Landscape
Architecture (CELA). She was named President of ASLS in 1999 and received the Award of Recognition for
Excellence in Academic Administration from CELA in 2002.
Caula A. Beyl (MS '77, Ph.D. '79) received the 2003 Distinguished Horticulture Alumni Award.
Caula is presently the Director of the Plant Science Center and Professor of Horticulture and Stress
Physiology at Alabama A&M. She has spent her entire professional career at Alabama A&M and contributed
to her University as a teacher, researcher and administrator. Caula was recognized by the Alabama A&M
School of Agriculture with both their outstanding teacher award (1991, 1998) and outstanding researcher
award (1993). In addition, she was recipient of the University Outstanding Teacher Award in 1998. Caula
and her family reside in Alabama.
Robert W. Harriman (Ph.D. '90) received the 2002 Distinguished Horticulture Alumni Award.
Bob is currently Vice President of Biotechnology at the Scotts Company in Marysville, Ohio. Scotts
is a leader in the turf and home garden industries and Bob is leading their biotechnology efforts
to develop new turf grass and ornamental plants for the golf course, lawn care and home garden segments
of their business. Prior to joining Scotts in 1999, Bob led a similar effort at the Monsanto Company.
He also held a position at Rutgers University in their Food Science Department. Bob frequently returns
to campus and guest lectures to horticulture and turf students. He and his wife reside in Ohio.
Marsh Campbell Kriplen (BSLA '88) received the 2002 Distinguished Landscape Architecture
Alumni Award. Marsh is presently the senior landscape architect at Robert A. M. Stern Architects.
Since joining this firm, Marsh has worked on a variety of projects including residences in Beverly Hills
and Carmel, California; corporate headquarters; and public buildings. His responsibilities include
design review, oversight and staffing for the landscape architecture department. Prior to accepting
his present position, Marsh worked at STUDIOS Architecture of San Francisco and at the Olin Partnership
in Philadelphia. He also completed his Master of Architecture degree at the University of California
at Berkeley. Marsh and his wife currently reside in New York City.
Mario F. Nievera (BSLA '87) received the 2003 Distinguished Landscape Architecture Alumni Award.
Upon graduation, Mario began his career with the landscape architecture firm, Morgan Wheelock Inc. He
quickly rose to principal and Vice President before leaving in 1996 to establish his own firm Mario
Nievera Design Incorporated. His firm provides landscape architecture and design services for residential,
corporate, institutional and commercial clients in the US, Canada and Caribbean. Mario has completed a
number of high profile projects and his work has been featured in numerous publications including Architectural
Digest, “W”, Southern Accents, House & Garden, The New York Times, Departures, Town & Country and Quest.
He divides his time between residences in Palm Beach, New York City and Shelter Island.
