Serving Size Surprise
gifSSspacer_3x10
Misjudging food serving sizes is one of the most common mistakes people make when counting calories. Take a relatively benign snack food like pretzels, for example. Glance at the food label and you'll see that one serving -- about three pretzels -- has 130 calories. "That's not so bad," you think. But as you watch TV, your hand dips into the pretzel bag until half of it is empty. Instead of consuming a single serving, you've eaten about four servings (or 12 pretzels) for a total of 520 calories! And that's not counting any calories you may have added from mustard on the pretzels or from the soda or beer you drank to wash them down.

No matter how closely you monitor the calories and fat in the foods you eat, if you're clueless about what makes up accurate serving sizes, you're probably consuming more food than you think you are -- and that means consuming more calories and fat too.

So, here's the challenge: We've gathered some common foods. Click on any item in the pyramid to be shown a variety of serving sizes of that item. Then see if you can pick the correct serving size .
