The 2007 – 2008 NIEHS Distinguished Lecture Series will welcome its next speaker, Jonathan Samet, M.D.,(http://faculty.jhsph.edu/?F=Jonathan%20M.&L=Samet) 
at 11:00 a.m. June 10 in Rodbell Auditorium, when he explores the topic of “Airborne Particles and Health; What Do We Know in 2008?” The lecture host will be NIEHS Acting Clinical Director Darryl Zeldin, M.D.
Samet is chairman of the Department of Epidemiology, director of the Institute for Global Tobacco Control and the Irene B. Fabrikant Professor in Health, Risk and Society at Johns Hopkins University Bloomberg School of Public Health. He is widely known as one of the world’s leading scientific experts on the health effects of active and passive smoking, and he was the senior scientific editor for the Surgeon General’s 2004 and 2006 reports on active and passive smoking. Samet was also responsible for the first surveillance efforts to track the tobacco epidemic in China.
Samet’s talk at NIEHS will review the findings of investigations into the sources and health effects of airborne particles, especially in respect to heart and lung disease. He also plans to address the current understanding of and research needs related to what characteristics of airborne particles determine toxicity; what sources produce the most injurious particles; how other co-pollutants contribute to the effects of particles; and what groups are more susceptible to the negative health effects of exposure to airborne particles.
