Hospital Discharge Rates for Nontraumatic Lower Extremity Amputation per 1,000 Diabetic Population, by Age, United States, 1980�05
In each of the three age groups examined, the hospital discharge rate with nontraumatic lower extremity amputation (LEA) per 1,000 persons with diabetes was lower in 2005 than in 1980, with rates decreasing since the mid 1990s. Across the time period, the LEA rate was highest for persons aged 75 years or older. In 2005, the LEA rate per 1,000 persons with diabetes was 3.7 among persons aged less than 65 years, 5.3 among persons aged 65-74, and 5.6 among persons aged 75 years or older.
