NATIONAL MEDIATION BOARD

RE: AMERICAN AIRLINES AND THE ASSOCIATION OF PROFESSIONAL FLIGHT ATTENDANTS (APFA)

The following statement was issued by National Mediation Board Chairwoman, Maggie Jacobsen, at the conclusion of contract negotiations between American Airlines and the Association of Professional Flight Attendants (APFA).

"I am extremely pleased that American and the APFA reached a contract settlement after nine months of interest-based bargaining. We worked with the two negotiating teams to help them use the interest-based approach, and facilitated their first two weeks of negotiations. We also served in an advisory capacity during their last two weeks of talks as they grappled with more difficult economic issues."

"The approach used by APFA and AMR avoided the traditionally lengthy and often contentious negotiations and mediation processes. Interest-based bargaining not only helps teams conclude strong contracts in a more timely fashion but also can play an important role in forging healthy, productive relationships between unions and management. The positive difference it has made between American and the APFA is dramatic."
