Re: MANSFIELD SELECTED AS NEW CHIEF OF STAFF

The National Mediation Board announced today the selection of Benetta M. Mansfield as the new Chief of Staff to replace outgoing Chief of Staff Stephen E. Crable. She will assume her new duties on March 11, and has designated Larry Gibbons to serve as Acting Deputy Chief of Staff.

Serving as the Deputy Chief of Staff since May 2000, Mansfield was named Transportation Lawyer of the Year in 2001. She came to the NMB on March 1, 1999 as a Senior Hearing Officer. Before coming to the Board, Mansfield served as Deputy Election Officer and Interim Election Officer in the Office of the Election Officer conducting the International Brotherhood of Teamsters election. Previously, she served as the Chief protest counsel to the Election Officer in the initial election.

Earlier, as Assistant General Counsel of the Amalgamated Transit Union International, she handled a wide range of labor law activities, from negotiation to litigation on representation and other issues. She has represented clients in numerous representation matters before the NLRB and state labor agencies and also has served as Counsel to a Board Member at the National Labor Relations Board.

She earned her J.D. degree in 1978 from the Northeastern University School of Law, was awarded a Ford Foundation Fellowship for doctoral studies in Political Science at the University of Minnesota, and graduated Phi Beta Kappa from Johns Hopkins University.
