5-A-Day and School-Age Children: Trends, Effects, Solutions
This kit provides a planned approach to address the issue of fruit and vegetable consumption in schools. It is full of strategies and resources to help you improve your school nutrition environment. The 5 A Day for Better Health Program recommends that all Americans enjoy the great taste and health benefits of at least five servings of fruits and vegetables a day as part of a lower-fat, higher-fiber eating style.
This kit includes:
- 5 A Day and School-Age Children: Trends, Effects, Solutions Paper [PDF - 6 pages]
This is an overview that explores the trends in fruit and vegetable consumption by school-age children, the health consequences and possible strategies for change.
- 5 A Day and School-Age Children: Trends, Effect, Solutions [PowerPoint Presentation - 47,000 KB]
This presentation can be used when recruiting team members and talking with groups. Portions could also be used with school administrators and community groups when making your case for more healthful meal and snack choices in schools. The presentation is too large to fit on a standard disc. When preparing your presentation, select the Notes Page View, in which you will find talking points for each slide as well as possible activities and supporting handouts. Also provided here as a PDF.
- Supporting Materials
These materials are intended to provide specific details and guidance for the issues addressed in the 5 A Day overview paper. They are "how-to" ideas for getting things done. The first item you will notice is Plan for Change [PDF - 1 page], with subsequent materials organized to help you achieve the six steps outlined for change:
Many of the materials are intended as "internal" guidelines for your team, while others can be used as fact sheets or educational tools when communicating your message about 5 A Day. Several of the resources in this module were adapted from materials in the NC 5 A Day Toolkit. The order form for the Toolkit can be sent via mail or fax by calling 919/715-3375. The cost for the Toolkit is $45 plus shipping and handling.
