Wetland Functional Assessments

wetland in the western U.S.The National Wetland Team is holding workshops for States on the development of Functional Assessments for use in making a determination of either minimal effect or a determination of minimal effects with mitigation.  The workshops provide the basic concepts of functional assessments, Hydrogeomorphic (HGM) classification, HGM functional assessments, and the process of establishing and applying minimal effect thresholds. Additionally, participants develop a rapid assessment model for a particular HGM wetland class within their geographic area.  Field data will be obtained at a reference wetland sites, as well as wetland sites to be impacted or a mitigation site.  Following successful completion of the workshop, participants will be able to independently develop and utilize rapid functional assessment models for other wetlands in their work area.  These workshops will be held over a four-day period and can involve a single State or a group of states requiring similar wetland classes.
