Oxford Dictionary of National Biography
Access: On-Site Access Only
Description: An illustrated collection of 50,000 specially written biographies of the men and women who shaped Britain's past. The Dictionary includes those who were born or died in Britain (including Ireland), as well as people from the former British Empire. Search either by: people, full text, references, contributors, or images (some in color); or browse entries alphabetically by name or by year of birth or death. Also allows users to browse by themes, which includes a ready reference feature that contains lists of prime ministers, archbishops of Canterbury, Nobel Prize winners, Olympic title holders, etc., and a list of topics such as medical biography.
Each entry begins with birth and death dates and a description of what the person was known for. The average biography is about 1,000 words long, although some entries are as long as 37,000 words. Entries conclude with bibliographies and a list of archives holding the subject's papers. Also contains links from almost six thousand biographies to relevant material in the Royal Historical Society's Bibliographies of British History. To learn about updates to the database, visit Oxford's DNB What's new website, or see the complete guide to using the online edition.
