2008 Mississippi Archaeology Expo

Over 1,000 attended the first annual Mississippi Archaeology Expo held at Millsaps College in Jackson, MS.  Cliff Jenkins, NRCS Cultural Resources Specialist, organized the event and served as the project director for the Archaeology Expo.  Children and adults learned about Mississippi's rich archaeological resources through hands-on activities, exhibits and demonstrations with real archaeologist.  Activities included flint knapping (stone tool making) and pottery making, a rock art wall, drilling with a pump drill, and using an atlatl (spear thrower).  The Mississippi Band of Choctaw Indians were also on hand demonstrating tribal social dances, basket making and beading.
