From the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, I’m Ira Dreyfuss with HHS HealthBeat. About one woman in five drinks during pregnancy. And a study finds the drinking raises the risk that those babies will grow into teens who get into serious trouble. Elizabeth Disney of Chase Brexton Health Services in Baltimore looked at data, while at the University of Minnesota, on about 1,250 teens and their parents. The mothers were asked if they had even one drink while they were pregnant. Teens and parents were asked – separately – about things like teens’ lying, cheating, and fighting. Disney reports: ``There is an extraordinarily strong link between mothers drinking during pregnancy and their children’s behavior problems many years later.’’ (12 seconds) The study in the American Academy of Pediatrics’ journal Pediatrics was supported by the National Institutes of Health.
