Diabetes or not

From the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, I’m Tishia Humes with HHS HealthBeat.

Over three million African-Americans aged 20 years and older are among those who have been diagnosed with diabetes. But diabetes is preventable and treatable – and not just with medicines.

Weight control, healthy food choices, and physical activity can fight diabetes. And physical activity need not be aerobic workouts. It can also include walking or dancing. You can take charge of your plan.

The acting director of the National Diabetes Education Program, Sabrina Harper:

“If you have a family history of diabetes -- most minorities do -- diabetes does not have to be your destiny. Find out more information about diabetes prevention” (11 seconds)

The Diabetes Prevention Program Study was done by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the National Institutes of Health.
