Hantavirus Rodent Carriers Images
A selection of images suitable for insertion into brochures, posters, and other prevention materials. Images include drawings and photos of both New World and Old World hantavirus rodent carriers. Images are in bitmap or .tif format, and are suitable for printing.

"Hantavirus Pulmonary Syndrome-United States: Updated Recommendations for Risk Reduction"
Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report
, July 26, 2002/Vol. 51/No. RR-9
This report provides updated recommendations for prevention and control of hantavirus infections associated with rodents in the United States. It supersedes the previous report (CDC. Hantavirus infection---southwestern United States: interim recommendations for risk reduction. MMWR 1993;42[No. RR-11]:1--13). These recommendations are based on principles of rodent and infection control, and accumulating evidence that most infections result from exposure, in closed spaces, to active infestations of infected rodents. The recommendations contain updated specific measures and precautions for limiting household, recreational, and occupational exposure to rodents, eliminating rodent infestations, rodent-proofing human dwellings, cleaning up rodent-contaminated areas and dead rodents, and working in homes of persons with confirmed hantavirus infection or buildings with heavy rodent infestations.

"Hantavirus Infection — Southwestern United States: Interim Recommendations for Risk Reduction" (links to CDC MMWR website)
Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report, July 30, 1993/Vol. 42/No. RR-11
This report provides interim recommendations for prevention and control of hantavirus infections associated with rodents in the southwestern United States. It is based on principles of rodent and infection control and contains specific recommendations for reducing rodent shelter and food sources in and around the home, recommendations for eliminating rodents inside the home and preventing them from entering the home, precautions for preventing hantavirus infection while rodent-contaminated areas are being cleaned up, prevention measures for persons who have occupational exposure to wild rodents, and precautions for campers and hikers.

"The Prevention of Hantavirus Disease" / "La Prevencion del Hantavirus" hand-out card (links to CDC "All About Hantavirus" website)
The 3.3" x 11" card is meant for use in hantavirus pulmonary syndrome prevention efforts. It consists of several simply written tips in English and Spanish, accompanied by illustrations of rodent-proofing and rodent infestation cleanup methods. It is available in two versions: as two web images and as two 300 dpi .tif images that can be sent to a quick printer for production.

Preventing Hantavirus Disease- Video Clips
Here you'll find a multimedia web version of a 1994 videotape discussing the nature of HPS and its prevention. Tons of web-ready pictures, sound and video clips! However, you'll need a fast computer connection to make downloading efficient. Produced for a general audience.

Hantavirus Pulmonary Syndrome Teaching Slideset (links to CDC "All About Hantavirus" website)
This slideset focuses on hantavirus pulmonary syndrome as it is found in the United States. Subjects covered include the following: general information on hantaviruses, phylogeny, transmission, clinical presentation, course, diagnosis, disease management, histopathology, epidemiology, prevention, and surveillance measures.

"Laboratory Management of Agents Associated with Hantavirus Pulmonary Syndrome: Interim Biosafety Guidelines" (links to CDC MMWR website)
Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report, May 13, 1994/Vol. 43/No. RR-7
This report provides interim biosafety guidelines for preventing laboratory-associated infections with agents that cause hantavirus pulmonary syndrome. The guidelines are based on extensive laboratory experience with the other hantaviruses—particularly work involving the use of permissive host animal species—and on the limited experience with a hantavirus recently isolated from deer mice. The guidelines address handling patient-derived specimens, propagating viruses in culture (including viral concentrate preparations), and housing and handling infected animals. These recommendations were developed with the assistance of expert consultants during a meeting of the American Society of Tropical Medicine and Hygiene, Subcommittee on Arbovirus Laboratory Safety, November 2, 1993, in Atlanta.

"Infection Control for Viral Hemorrhagic Fevers In the African Health Care Setting"
This reference manual, developed collaboratively by CDC and the World Health Organization, helps African health facilities make advance preparations for responding with appropriate precautions when a VHF case is suspected, and serves as a rapid reference when a VHF case appears at a health facility where no previous VHF preparations have been made. The precautions described make use of materials such as household bleach, plastic buckets, locally available cloth and ordinary cake soap, that are available even in remote areas. The many illustrations, straightforward, step-by-step instructions and aids help make the manual easy to use. Although the manual is targeted for African healthcare settings, the basic VHF control and barrier nursing information can be useful for other settings. The manual is also available in French and Portuguese.

Lassa Fever Online Slideset
This slide set covers general facts, transmission, prevention and control of Lassa fever. Geared towards public health, medical, or educational use.

"Lassa" Online Video
View our video documentary about Lassa fever online! This documentary outlines the nature of the disease, shows the tragedy it causes, and tells the unfolding story of the epidemiology, natural history, and control of Lassa fever through the work of the Lassa Fever Project set up by CDC in 1976. (Note: For more information on Lassa fever, check our fact sheet.)
