RSS: How To

An RSS feed allows you to receive, automatically and at no extra cost, the latest news articles published on UNEP's website.

What is an RSS feed?

RSS (Really Simple Syndication) feeds are streams of free content from editorial Internet sites. They contain titles of articles and hypertext links pointing to the full article. For the specialists, it is a data transmission method trough an XML (Extensible Markup Language) stream.

What can I do with RSS?

It is an easy, practical and free means of being permanently notified about your favourite news topics. An RSS feed is updated automatically: you are not obliged to visit your favourite website to check for updates. As soon as a new press release is published, the title of the article immediately appears on your computer. By simply clicking on the title, you will automatically be directed to the full press release on our website.

How does it work?

If you do not have an RSS reader, you can either install one on your computer, or use a web based RSS reader. (UNEP recommends FeedReader, a free software developed by i-Systems).

If you have another RSS reader software, or if you are using a browser with an embedded RSS reader (Firefox for instance) you can add UNEP’s RSS feeds to your channels by going to: http://www.unep.org/newscentre/default.asp?l=en&ct=rss

What is FeedReader?

It is a free RSS Reader for Windows Operating system. It allows you to read and organize your RSS feeds.

How to install FeedReader?

To install FeedReader, simply download it from http://www.feedreader.com

How to add RSS feeds to FeedReader?

Select the "New" option and then copy/paste your RSS feed URL.

How to delete a feed from FeedReader?

Right click on the feed and select the "Delete" option.

Where can I get more information on RSS feeds?
