Dear Dr Alexander,
Has UNEP provided any kind of support so as to face challenges related to the Minamata disease in Kyushu, Japan?
Francis Bagambilana (from United Republic of Tanzania)
Dear Francis,

At the time when Minamata desease was detected and recognized in Kumamoto Prefecture (1956) and Niigata Prefecture (1965), UNEP did not exist; it was established in 1972. However, at present UNEP is playing a leading role in raising awareness and in establishing mechanisms to deal with mercury pollution. You might wish to check UNEP mercury program website http://www.chem.unep.ch/mercury/default.htm.

Yours, Alexander
