Skalkaho Falls located south of Hamilton, MTThe Forest offers a variety of recreation sites including more than 35 campgrounds and picnic areas and many water sport and winter play areas. The Bitterroot National Forest offers a "Walk by the Light of the Moon" series of interpretive walks during spring, summer, fall and winter.

Get away with family or friends and enjoy an experience from yesteryear. A night spent in a Forest Service fire lookout, or cabin can be a unique, and memorable experience! You can choose from among several properties in the Bitterroot Forest, from lonely fire lookouts perched atop a mountain to quiet cabins nestled deep in the forest. Cabins and Lookouts available through the rental program are rustic and primitive in nature. More.

Winter Activities

The Bitterroot National Forest is no exception in providing winter recreation. Opportunities from the thrill of downhill skiing and snowmobiling, to the quiet solitude of cross-country skiing and snowshoeing are available. Pick from a selection of the forest's most scenic trails and enjoy breathtaking views. Breathtaking scenery is provided by 30 deep, rocky, glaciated canyons breaking the sharp face of the Bitterroot range at regular intervals to the west. Most of this rugged range is wilderness. Wilderness

There are over 743,800 acres of wilderness on the Bitterroot National Forest: this includes the Anaconda-Pintler (41,162 acres), Frank Church River of No Return (193,703 acres), and Selway-Bitterroot (508,217acres).
