Welcome

Fish Lake The largest natural mountain lake in the state, it offers trophy fishing and bird watching.

The Fishlake National Forest in central Utah features majestic stands of aspen encircling open mountain meadows that are lush with a diverse community of forbs and grasses. Fish Lake, from which the forest takes its name, is considered by many to be the gem of Utah. The largest natural mountain lake in the state, it offers trophy fishing and bird watching. The mountains of the Fishlake are a source of water for many of the neighboring communities and agricultural valleys in the region. Hunting, fishing and OHV use are among the most popular forms of recreation enjoyed by forest visitors. A “working forest,” the Fishlake is managed for livestock grazing and timber management. In the coming years, increased interest in mineral, oil and gas reserves may extend to portions of the Fishlake National Forest.

Secure Rural Schools

On October 3, 2008, H.R. 1424 became Public Law (P.L.) 110-343.  Section 601 in Division C of H.R. 1424 reauthorized and amended the Secure Rural Schools and Community Self-Determination Act of 2000 as originally enacted in P.L. 106-393. More than $500 million for FY 2008 will be available to 41 states and Puerto Rico for improvements to public schools, road maintenance and stewardship projects under this act. More information on this act.

Proposed Land Management Plan for the Fishlake and Dixie National Forests

A Forest Plan provides management direction for the many multiple uses of a national forest. On March 30, 2007 a ruling in U.S. District Court prohibited the Forest Service from implementing or utilizing a 2005 Planning Rule, which the Fishlake and Dixie National Forests had been using as a guide in their forests' plan revision process. We have, therefore, suspended our work on a new Forest Plan for our two forests. The Forest Service expects to release a new rule that addresses the courts concerns sometime during the Spring of 2008. We will share more information on our website as it becomes available to us. In the meantime, you may read more about the progress we had made prior to the U.S. District Court's ruling. More.
