Farm and Food Policy Diversity Initiative

Promoting Diversity and Equity in the 2007 Farm Bill

The Farm and Food Policy Diversity Initiative is a diverse collaboration of organizations representing people of color farmers, rancher, farm workers and urban food system advocates. It is designed to ensure organizations serving people of color in the food system have the opportunity to link their own initiatives into a comprehensive agenda of food and agriculture policy proposals that allow diverse communities to benefit from the opportunities that other farmers have had for decades and to assure full participation of people of color producers, farm workers and rural and urban communities in the food system.

Over 30 of the Diversity Initiative provisions have been including in the Farm Bill Conference report which is now awaiting final passage on the House and Senate floors. The provisions in the final bill make major and long overdue changes that dramatically improve the ability of socially disadvantaged farmers and farmworkers to participate in the food, fuel, and fiber production in this country at a level that adds to the sustainability of local economies and contributes to local food systems.

Diversity Initiative Action Alert - Ask Congress to Fund Federally Recognized Tribal Extension Program (FRTEP) and RMA Community Outreach and Assistance Partnership Program Conference Report.

As Congress considers Agriculture Appropriations this week, the DI Team has developed a sign-on letter that asks Congress to provide increased funding ($10 M) for the Federally Recognized Tribal Extension Program (FRTEP) and report language requesting that USDA maintain the same level of funding for the RMA Community Outreach and Assistance Partnership Programs as provided in FY 2008 ($8.3 M, rather than the $2.25 M left after a recent round of USDA negotiations).  If your organization would like to sign on, please contact Amy Saltzman, asaltzman@ruralco.org, with your organization name, location, and the message, Sign On.

We also recommend that you contact your members of Congress directly in support of these provisions.

Linking the Interests of U.S. Farmers with Farmers Globally

Building A Sustainable Future

The Building Sustainable Futures for Farmers Globally campaign seeks to expand the public debate and change public policy on trade and agriculture. Through public education around the 2007 U.S. Farm Bill debate, we strive to address the underlying causes of dumping and identify and support solutions that would serve to foster global economic development and poverty alleviation in the agriculture sector.
