Wanted: the BEST in Gardening Photography from the Greater DC Region! What gardener hasn’t seen those gorgeous garden photos published in magazines and newspapers and thought, “I can do that!” or “My roses are just as good, if not nicer!”? Enter the first annual Washington Gardener Photo Contest and have a chance of getting your winning images published, too! Whether your take the photos in your own backyard, a nearby public garden, or while visiting friends and family in their local gardens, there are so many photographic opportunities to be found. Mary Frogale, Green Spring’s propagator/horticulturist, discusses topics such as potting mixes, containers, seed treatments, lighting, fertilization, watering, seed sources, and timing. Be inspired with seed starting fever! Then take home a few Green Spring seeds of your own. $20. Past, Present and Future of the Smithsonian’s Ripley Garden Sunday, February 8 1:30-3pm.
What is it like to garden in front of 35 million people from all over the globe? Janet Draper, horticulturalist, applies Smithsonian’s goal of “increase and diffusion of knowledge” to the Ripley garden with attention grabbing plants, innovative combinations and by defying the accepted notion of what a public garden is expected to be. $10. Low Impact Development Strategies for Home Gardeners Saturday, February 14 9:30-11am. Rain gardens, water barrels, appropriate plants selection, are all ways to make lower impacts on our planet. Brenda Skarphol, Green Spring horticulturalist discusses these concepts and provides practical information for you to implement in your garden. Instruction takes place inside and outdoors. Get the scoop from Adrian Higgins, Washington Post garden writer and editor, on the latest in fruit and vegetable gardening. $10. Garden Renovation Basics Sunday, February 22 1:30-3pm. Gardens are constantly changing and sometimes major renovations are needed. Jim Adams, horticulturalist at the British Embassy, divulges the thoughts and steps involved in his garden renovations that you can use in your garden. $10 Green Spring Master Gardeners Present - 5th Annual EcoSavvy Gardening Symposium: Techniques for Keeping Our Planet Healthy Saturday, February 28 8:30am-4pm.
