Requirements and Procedure to become a Flower Show Judges

GENERAL INFORMATION

HOW TO BECOME A FLOWER SHOW JUDGE

To become a NGC Accredited Judge one must fulfill the following requirements:

• Be an active member of a NGC or international Affiliate Club.
• Own and study the NGC Handbook for Flower Shows.
• Subscribe to The National Gardener.
• Attend Flower Show School Courses one through four.

                  ~ It is recommended, but not required, that the courses be taken in order.

                  ~ No more than two courses may be taken for credit in a calendar year, and all

                     courses must be at least four months apart.

• Be present for the full two days of classes required for each plus the examination period.
• Pass all examinations with a score of 70 ormore.
• After attending a second course, students may begin to earn the five exhibiting credits.
• After attending a third course, students may earn judging credits as a Student Judge,  
• As a final assignment, Student Judges will write a sample flower show schedule which     will be evaluated by a Flower Show Instructor.
• A grade of 70 or more must be achieved. W When required exhibiting and judging credits have been earned and the Schedule assignment credited, the Student Judge will take an examination of the Handbook.
• After passing the Handbook Examination with a grade of 70 or more, the Student Judge becomes an Accredited Flower Show Judge
• As an Accredited Flower Show Judge, symposia may be attended and further exhibits and judging credits accumulated to proceed to Life and Master Judge status

WHAT INFORMATION IS TAUGHT IN FLOWER SHOW SCHOOLS

Each Flower Show School consists of two days of instruction which includes:

Educational instruction on some horticultural plant or interest This includes

1) general horticultural information about the subject

2) judging information on the subject

3) instruction in point scoring the subject.

Educational instruction in design and related topics. This includes

1) general information on design.

2) instruction on some of the specific types of floral designs.

3) judging information on the subject designs.

4) instruction on point scoring subject designs

Instruction on Flower Show Procedure. This includes general information on what a flower show is and how it is presented including:

1) types of flower shows

2) committees make up.

3) Divisions in a show: Horticulture, Design and Special Exhibits

4) ethics and procedures in flower shows and judging.

5) information concerning requirements and goals of flower show schools, symposia and judges and judging.

• You learn new design and horticultural techniques and methods.

• You are invited to judge some outstanding flower shows - and get to see them before the rooms are crowded with attendees.

• The satisfaction of knowing that you are participating in a stimulating, exciting activity involving many talented people.

• You meet other Flower Show Judges and share a delightful day with them and with the chairmen of the show being given.

• By promoting Standard Flower Shows you are furthering one of the objectives of the NGC by providing an educational experience for members and the public.

• You are representing NGC, an organization of a quarter million members.
