Louisiana is losing about 25 square miles of coastal wetlands to erosion every year. The Golden Meadow Plant Materials Center in Galliano, Louisiana develops plants and procedures to reverse this loss of coastal wetlands in Louisiana, Texas and Mississippi. The Center has released several improved conservation plants including 'Pelican’ black mangrove, ‘Vermillion’ smooth cordgrass, 'Gulf Coast' marshhay cordgrass, Brazoria Germplasm seashore paspalum, Timbalier Germplasm seacoast bluestem, Bayou Lafourche Germplasm California bulrush, 'Fort Polk' vetivergrass and Caminada Germplasm seaoats. The Center has published release brochures and planting guides on establishing these coastal plants.
