Unbranded and unclaimed free-roaming horses on BLM administered public lands in the western United States are protected and managed in accordance with the Wild Free-Roaming Horse and Burro Act of 1971. Excess animals are offered to the general public for adoption.
Two of the 24 herd management areas in Utah, the Canyonlands Wild Burro herd management area and the Robbers Roost herd management area, are located in the Richfield Field Office. Stock reservoirs and intermittent streams, fed by winter snows and spring runoff, provide adequate water for the herd management areas. Topography is highly variable, ranging from flat desert grassland with desert shrub and rough terrain, to slightly rolling foothills carved by drainages.
