Land Use & Tenure

Whether land is allocated to crops, pasture and rangeland, urban development or other land uses has important economic and environmental implications. For over 50 years, ERS has provided the only consistent measurements of all major uses of public and private land in the United States. ERS also conducts a variety of research on the economics and impacts of land-use changes, the value of agricultural land, the characteristics of land owners and operators, and government programs to preserve land in agricultural production.

Spotlights

Major Uses of Land in the United States, 1945-2002—The ERS major land use data series is the only consistent accounting of all major uses of public and private land in the United States. The series contains acreage estimates of major uses by region and States for each census of agriculture year from 1945 through 2002. The related U.S. cropland series dates back to 1910.

Farmland Protection: The Role of Public Preferences for Rural Amenities—Analyses of State and local farmland protection programs and evidence in the literature reveal the extent of public support for maintaining amenities. This report also provides insights into how farmland protection programs operate as a policy instrument for protecting amenities.
