San Jose State University, San Jose, CA
Brookhaven National Laboratory, Upton, NY

AWARD DETAILS
Fellowships include all tuition, transportation, housing, some food, textbooks, laboratory supplies, and laboratory manuals. Six semester-units of transferable academic credit will be awarded by San Jose State University and the State University of New York at Stony Brook.  More in information is available at

Completed forms must be received by February 1, 2009.

QUALIFICATIONS
Candidates should be undergraduate chemistry or physics majors who will be entering their junior or senior year in the fall of 2009. Preference will be given to entering seniors. Applicants must be U.S. citizens.  No previous experience in nuclear science is necessary.

SELECTION
The Summer Schools are limited to 24 students, 12 at each campus. Announcement of awards will be in March 2009.

COURSE DESCRIPTION
The formal program consists of lecture and laboratory components which cover the fundamentals of nuclear theory, radiochemistry, nuclear instrumentation, radiological safety, and applications to related fields. In addition, there are special symposia, guest lectures, and field trips to nearby research centers; typical topics are:

  • nuclear medicine
  • nuclear power
  • fundamental particle physics
  • environmental radiochemistry
  • Thus, students get to meet and interact with many leading scientists in these various fields.

    FUTURE OPPORTUNITIES
Participants in the 2009 Summer Schools will be encouraged to join a research project during the following summer at a university or federal research institution. Considerable personal assistance will be provided to secure summer positions and admission to Ph.D. and M.D. Programs at leading universities.

Information supplied my Matt Lippis (12/98)

Mike Vance — Oh well. Yes, Jen and I are getting married on August 1st in Crawfordsville, IN. We have currently decided to put off grad school. We are both working for Eli Lilly in Indy for the next two years. I am doing analytical and Jen is doing organic for Discovery. The jobs are pretty nice. Getting paid is nice, the benefits are great, and my group is extremely cool. In two years we will go back to grad school to get Ph.D.'s in chem. Jen will go for organic and I will opt for a discipline to be named later.

Trent Vorlicek: (at Univ of Maryland) — Now, what do I do? I guess I'm an environmental aqueous geochemist. I am studying the wastemetal transport in sulfidic waters. Sulfidic waters occur under anoxic conditions as microorganisms turn to sulfate for electron transfer (thereby reducing it to H2S) in order to oxidize organic matter. Specifically, I am studying molybdenum chemistry. I am looking at the possible role mineral surfaces play in surface catalysis for thiomolybdate (MoS4(2-)) formation. A previous grad student has shown that molybdate ion (MoO4(2-)) can under four substions of S for O to form thiomolybdate and that this process is acid catalyzed. I am looking at clays like kaolinite to see if there is enough protanation on the surface of the clay (they have a very large surface area) even at the pH of seawater (pH=9) to facilitate surface catalysis of molybdate to thiomolybdate. I am also looking at pyrite (FeS2). Eventually, I will do a kinetics study and characterize the mechanisms involved. Right now, I

am just trying to prove that it is a worthy Ph.D. project which it appears I have done. The hope of such study is to show that thiomolybdates can serve as a proxy for anoxic conditions. Evidently, over time, the thiomolybdates can sorb to particulate matter and settle out. Cores can

then be taken and dating methods applied. But moreso, my research is just trying to add some knowledge to waste metal transport in the ocean. As a part of my project, I will be using EXAFS to characterize complex formation at the mineral interfaces. In fact, my advisor will be on sabatical all next year at SLAC to study EXAFS for this purpose.

Mike McCarthy: (at Berkeley) — I have joined an atmospheric chemistry group. I am studying the mass independent fractionation of ozone and N2O in the stratosphere. This is stable isotope stuff with a mass-isotope ratio mass spec.

Joann Prisciandaro: — Long time no hear. Things are going well for me in grad school, a little hectic but what else is new. I working at the National Superconducting Cyclotron Laboratory, taking classes and trying to get some research done. I'm interested in studying nuclear structure of neutron-rich nuclides, within the vicinity of Z=23. I working with Paul Mantica, a fairly new faculty member at MSU. Should be running my thesis experiment May of 1999, that is if there aren't any more changes in the schedule.

Unfortunately I somehow lost contact with Po-ssu when he went off to CalTech for grad school. He’s doing some high level biology studies (I was completely lost last time we talked). Catherine hasn’t emailed me yet about her work at the Seaborg Institute yet. But currently she’s working for CES/LLNL in the environmental monitoring group. I’m still searching for James Baker and Sharon Joag. Tara White has gotten married and I believe isn’t going to school or pursuing it.
