How to Search the SARE Database of Projects

The following searching options are available, using the pull-down windows (click on the arrow to show choices, then click on your selection):

Search all four SARE regions, or select one region to search.
Search within one state.
Search all types of SARE projects, or select one type of project (see types of SARE grants).
Select the type of text you want to search for. (full text, title, project number)
Once you enter your search terms, click on the "search" button. Pressing the "return/enter" key on your keyboard will not activate your search.

To list all projects nationwide, or within a region or project type, leave the search term box blank.

Return to the search engine or see more search tips below.

Query language for SARE research projects

To find a specific project number, type the letters, the year, a dash, and then the number, without any spaces:

LNE98-100
AS93-009

Note that the final number must be three digits, so you may need to add one or two zeros after the dash:

INCORRECT: AS93-9, AS93-09
CORRECT: AS93-009

If you want to refine a search with more than one search term, you may separate the terms with the keywords 'OR', 'AND', 'AND NOT', or 'NEAR'.
For Example:
Use OR to find more documents than using AND:

intensive or grazing
finds documents containing either the word 'intensive' or the word 'grazing'

intensive and grazing
finds documents containing both 'intensive' and 'grazing'

Use AND NOT to exclude certain words, especially useful after you search once and find many documents that you're not interested in:

grazing and not intensive
finds documents containing 'grazing' but not 'intensive' (you are not interested in 'intensive grazing')

Use NEAR to find documents containing words in close proximity:

intensive near grazing
finds documents containing both 'intensive' and 'grazing', where the terms are relatively close to one another

Use the wildcard symbol (*) to search for words with the same root:

Fertil*
finds documents containing words starting with 'fertil', such as fertile, fertilize, fertilizer, fertility, fertilization.

Mix and match depending on whether you are getting too many or too few "hits"--or results:

Fertil* and not nitrogen
intensive and grazing and not beef

Narrowing searches by choosing search type

If you want to search only on a certain category, you may change the type of search to narrow you results.

Use a Keyword search to find your text in all fields.
Use a Title search to find your text in the title of the project.
Use a Project Number search if you know the project number.
Use a Summary search to find your text in the body of the project summary.
