Becoming an NBII-GBIF Data Provider
Second US DiGIR workshop: Becoming an NBII-GBIF Data Provider
September 21, 2004, Reston, VA. (Outside of Washington, DC)
Following the success of the first session in April, NBII (National
Biological Information Infrastructure) is offering a second one-day
workshop on "Becoming an NBII-GBIF Data Provider." The workshop will cover
the DiGIR Communications Protocol, the Darwin Core metadata schema,
software and hardware requirements, and how to crosswalk your database
schema. Participants are encouraged to bring a copy of their
organization's database for live demonstration and one-on-one
troubleshooting. The intended audience is an organization's database
administrator, or a department's IT and/or systems personnel.
NBII seeks to provide access and highlight digitized US collections, in
order to represent them and their needs to GBIF (http://www.gbif.org/) and
the international community.
- To facilitate this, NBII has established an "NBII-GBIF Portal" for
data providers, displaying data from participating US
institutions/organizations.
- The portal (and more information) can be found at
http://gbif.nbii.gov
As the U.S. Node to the Global Biodiversity Information Facility (GBIF),
NBII looks forward to working with educational and research institutions
across the United States interested in showcasing their digitized
collections through the GBIF network. NBII is a broad, collaborative
program designed to provide increased access to data and information on the
nation's biological resources, and works with federal, non-federal, state,
universities, societies, museums, and local organizations to accomplish its
goals and objectives.
