Competitive Programs
The CSREES Competitive Programs Unit manages
funding opportunities that challenge the
nation's top researchers to identify, solve,
and put into practice solutions to problems
that improve the safety, quality, productivity,
and security of our food supply, the well-being
of animals, humans, the environment and
natural resources, and rural and urban
communities.
In 2004, the National Research Initiative Competitive Grants Program received
3,299 proposals of which approximately 500 were recommended for an award. NRI
National Program Leaders review and evaluate all proposals with the assistance
of a peer panel of qualified scientists and other appropriate persons who are
specialists in the field covered by the proposal. Proposals are awarded in order
of merit to the extent permitted by available funds. Projects are supported for
periods up to 4 years.
