USDA/1890 National Scholars Program

The USDA/1890 National Scholars Program offers scholarships to U.S. Citizens who are seeking a bachelor's degree in agriculture or a related science at one of the 1890 Land Grant Institutions. The purpose of the National Scholars Program is to strengthen the long-term partnership between the Department of Agriculture and the 1890 Institutions; increase the number of students studying agriculture, food and nutrition, and natural resource sciences; and offer career opportunities at USDA.

Major Studies

National Scholars are required to study the following or related disciplines:

Agriculture

Agriculture Business/Management

Agriculture Economics

Agricultural Engineering/Mechanics

Agricultural Productions and Technology

Agronomy or Crop Science

Animal Science

Botany

Farm and Range Management

Fish, Game, or Wildlife Management

Food Services/Technology

Forestry and Related Services

HOme Economics/Nutrition/Human Development

Horticulture

Natural Resources Management

Soil Conservation/Soil Science

  • Other related disciplinces (e.g., biological sciences, pre-veterinary medicince, and computer science).

General Eligibility - 1890 Scholars Program

  • Be a U.S. Citizen

  • Be an entering freshman

  • Hold a high school diploma or GED certificate

  • Have a high school grade point average (GPA) of 3.0 or better

  • Have a combined verbal/math score of 1,000 or more on the SAT or a composite score of 21 or more on the ACT

  • Apply for admission to one of the 1890 Lang Grant Institutions and study the required disciplines

  • Demonstrate leadership and community service
