Forest Health Monitoring Program History

FHM plot measurements began in New England in 1990. The program expanded the next year to include some Mid-Atlantic and Southern states, and, thereafter, more states were steadily added each year (see History_fhm_activities.xls for details on FHM plot work). The original forest health indicators included: crown condition, tree damage, and mensuration. Other indicators, such as ozone, lichens, and soils, were introduced in subsequent years. Methods for vegetation diversity and down woody material were tested and developed (therefore, these data are not publicly available).

FIA Phase 3 (Forest Health) Data

Starting in 2000, the Forest Inventory and Analysis (FIA) program, in addition to the conversion from periodic to annual surveys, added the suite of forest health measurements to a subset of the sample locations. This subset, referred to as the Phase 3 (P3) sample, consists largely of the measurements and plots which formerly comprised the plot component of the Forest Health Monitoring (FHM) program. The P3 forest health indicators include data on tree damage, crown condition, presence of ozone damage, lichen species diversity, soils, and down woody material. A seventh set of measurements pertaining to total vegetative diversity is in development.

Data for the P3 component of the Annual FIA program is available through the FIA DataMart page. Please note that the annual inventory program was implemented gradually across the US, starting with about a dozen states in 2000, with increased participation every year thereafter.
