SafetyNET Background Checks Extended Through 2009
In the midst of the overwhelming involvement and action of the 110th
Congress to address the crisis in the financial markets, Congressional
champions committed to ultimate passage of the Child Protection
Improvements Act managed to secure a full one-year extension of the
SafetyNET criminal background check pilot. The extension will now run
until January 31, 2010. This means that mentoring programs will
continue to have access to FBI background checks for mentoring
volunteers through the Child Safety Pilot. If you are interesting in
participating in SafetyNET, please contact: Kate Schineller at kschineller@mentoring.org.

Using Volunteer Motivations for Effective Mentor Recruitment and Retention
Functional volunteer theory is built on the premise
that individuals volunteer for a reason, or a combintation of reasons,
and that volunteers doing very similar work such as mentoring may have
come to that experience in an effort to realize diverse individual
goals.
This website examines how mentoring programs can use
the Volunteer Functions Inventory tool to create more powerful mentor
recruitment messages and frame the volunteer experience to meet
mentors’ personal expectations and motivations for getting involved.

National Prisoner Statistics Program: Census of State and Federal Correctional Facilities, 2005
The Bureau of Justice Statistics recently released a Census of State
and Federal Correctional Facilities. Some of the highlights of
the 28 page report full of state-by-state data include:
- There was a 9% growth in the number of facilities between
2000 and 2005. Most of that increase was fueled by private
corrections facilities, privately managed, coming on line under
contract with the Federal Bureau of Prisons.
- Nearly
all correctional facilities provide some levels of counseling and
programming—including life skills, community adjustment, drug and
alcohol counseling and awareness, etc.
- One percent of U.S. facilities was under court-ordered mandates to reduce overcrowding in 2005.
