National Prisoner Statistics Program: Census of State and Federal Correctional Facilities, 2005

The Bureau of Justice Statistics recently released a Census of State and Federal Correctional Facilities.  Some of the highlights of the 28 page report full of state-by-state data include:

  • There was a 9% growth in the number of facilities between 2000 and 2005.  Most of that increase was fueled by private corrections facilities, privately managed, coming on line under contract with the Federal Bureau of Prisons.
  • Nearly all correctional facilities provide some levels of counseling and programming—including life skills, community adjustment, drug and alcohol counseling and awareness, etc.
  • One percent of U.S. facilities was under court-ordered mandates to reduce overcrowding in 2005.
