This partnership among Bioversity International (formerly the International Plant Genetic Resources Institute - IPGRI) and GBIF means that the SINGER (System-wide Information Network for Genetic Resources)and EURISCO (European Plant Genetic Resources Search Catalogue)databases are indexed by and accessible via the GBIF data portal. To achieve this, SINGER and EURISCO have been mapped to the Darwin Core and ABCD standards.
Together, the SINGER and EURISCO information systems include some 1.7 million accessions.
SINGER is an initiative of the System-wide Genetic Resources Programme (SGRP) of the Consultative Group on International Agricultural Research (CGIAR) . Bioversity International (formerly IPGRI) is the Convening Centre for SGRP and provides the Programme's Secretariat.
SINGER provides public access to information about the collections of plant genetic resources held in trust for the world community by the CGIAR centres. Through SINGER, the information about the collections held at 11 CGIAR genebanks around the world, as well as the vegetable collection held at AVRDC (The World Vegetable Center), is made available on the Internet from a single entry point.
EURISCO contains information on almost one million accessions from 34 national inventories, which represents about half of all accessions held in European ex situ collections and a sixth of those held worldwide. EURISCO is hosted by Bioversity International on behalf of the European Cooperative Programme for Crop Genetic Resources Networks (ECP/GR).
From December 2006, IPGRI and INIBAP operate under the name "Bioversity International". This name echoes IPGRI's new strategy, which focuses on improving people's lives through biodiversity research.
Other genebank-type data providers available through GBIF include:
More such providers will be added to GBIF in the near future, as work is completed in deploying the GBIF/BioCASe Internet protocol.
