The e-journal Biodiversity Informatics has been officially launched. With a lead paper by Vanderlei Canhos and colleagues speaking to international biodiversity informatics, and a paper by Barbara Stein and John Wieczorek on the MaNIS distributed database system, and five more papers presently ‘in process’, the journal appears to be off to a good start. The journal is openly and freely available to all at http://jbi.nhm.ku.edu/index.php.

The site features a number of conveniences such as automatic notification of new articles published. All readers and authors are welcome. It is hoped that this medium can serve to facilitate communication and interchange within this new community of scientists.
