The mission of Botanic Gardens Conservation International (BGCI) is to build and maintain a world network of Botanic Gardens for plant conservation.
BGCI strongly believes plant extinction could be eliminated by supporting focused local action, national strategy and international policy among a global alliance dedicated to the conservation and sustainable use of plant resources.
BGCI works to educate and promote conservation awareness and sustainability by providing technical guidance, data and support for Botanic Gardens in over 150 countries worldwide.
BGCI brings together the world’s botanic gardens to form a community working in partnership to achieve conservation and education goals.
Over 200 million people visit botanic gardens every year and BGCI works with its member gardens to reach this public through school programmes and staff training. Through the allocation of grants and the provision of knowledge and support, BGCI works with gardens to conserve threatened indigenous species around the world.
BGCI uses its knowledge to influence governments on the importance of plant conservation, and publishes newsletters and reviews to raise awareness of this critical subject.
