As of 09:00 hr (GMT+1) on 29 January 2004, over 8.5 million records are available from 29 providers in 14 GBIF Participant countries. Watch the blue box at the right of the GBIF home page to check on the current tally.

Occasionally, one or another data provider will experience computer difficulties, and their data may go offline for a short time. Thus, the number of records fluctuates to a certain extent. However, the overall trend is definitely upward in terms of the amount of data available to the world.

However, as GBIF strengthens its information architecture and with its partners achieves more widely accepted standards for software and protocols, these difficulties should be overcome.
