Bush's New Freedom Initiative, EEOC's Office of Legal Counsel is coordinating with EEOC field offices across the country to provide free workshops to small business owners, individuals with disabilities, and other groups, to educate them about the ADA. The workshops provide technical assistance to small businesses about the advantages of hiring individuals with disabilities, and provide technical assistance to individuals with disabilitites regarding ADA rights and responsibilities. These workshops, which include information on tax incentives and community resources, are aimed at encouraging businesses with 15 to 100 employees to hire individuals with disabilities
The workshops address such topics as the "definition of disability," interviewing job applicants with disabilities, and how to make reasonable accommodations. Small business owners receive information about tax incentives available to businesses that hire and retain individuals with disabilities and information on local resources for recruiting and hiring qualified individuals with disabilities. Most importantly, the workshops provide participants with an opportunity to ask any questions they may have about the ADA.
Although several of the scheduled workshops are three hours long, they vary in length and content and can be customized to meet a particular group's needs. For example, a local chamber of commerce or an organization representing individuals with disabilities could request EEOC to participate in a brown-bag lunch discussion or to speak at a planned seminar. The Department of Justice also will participate in some of these events with the EEOC to discuss the ADA's public accommodation rules.
