Page 3 Title of Flower Show General Rules 1. Throughout the show, emphasis is placed on growing, showing and designing with FRESH plant materials, except where noted in the Schedule.
2. Classes are open to growers and designers. All entries are to be the work of one exhibitor. Exception: Club Competition Section.
3. All exhibits in the three Divisions must be approved by the Classification Committee. The Committee reserves the right to mark, “Not for Competition” any exhibit not of show quality, late entries and those not conforming to the Flower Show Schedule.
4. During judging, only judges, the clerks and required committee members will be allowed in the judging area.
5. All judging will be based on the Standard System of Awarding as set forth by the National Garden Club, Inc. Handbook for Flower Shows. 2007, pp. 5-7. (HB pp. 298-302 for Horticulture Scale of Points, pp. 303-304 for all Design and Educational Scale of Points, and p. 304 for Gardens and Artistic Crafts scale of points). The decision of the Judges is final. See pp. 11-12 of this schedule for available awards and descriptions. Awards will be withheld if not merited. (All Scales of Points may also be obtained from the NCAGC website, www.ncagardenclubs.org.; two new Scales of Points for Collections not printed in HB 2007, first edition, are included on website.) 11. Conservation material may be used if acquired in a lawful manner and labeled with the botanical name and common name. A 3” X 5” card with the following statement should accompany the exhibit: “In accordance with the policies of the National Capital Area Garden Clubs, Inc., the public display here of native plants is not contrary to conservation practices. These plants were properly gathered with permission of the owner and where locally abundant.”
12. The Flower Show Committee will endeavor to protect all exhibits but cannot be responsible for loss or damage to the exhibitor's property. Properties should be inconspicuously marked with the exhibitor's name.
Page 4 Title of Flower Show Division I - Horticulture Rules for Exhibitors 1. All horticulture specimens must be fresh plant materials grown by exhibitor. Plant material may not be altered by the application (treatment) of oil, commercial “shine” products, etc. that may artificially change the natural color and texture. 2. All specimens must be named, giving genus and species; variety/cultivar added when available, or when schedule gives genus and/or species. No Top Award will be granted if the exhibit is not correctly identified by botanical name. 3. Exhibitor may make more than one entry per class or sub-class, if each is a different genus, species, variety, cultivar, type, form, size, or color. If possible all entry cards are to be filled out in advance and in pencil. Schedule may state that entry cards may be obtained from Horticulture Chairman. 4. All entries are to be checked by the Classification Committee and then turned over to the Placement Committee for positioning. 5 Container-grown plants must have been in exhibitor's possession at least 90 days, except for multiple and combination plantings, which must have been growing together and in exhibitor's possession at least six weeks. Cut annuals and biennials must have been in exhibitor’s possession from seeds, cuttings or immature plants, perennials for at least 90 days, bulbous blooms from planting of bulb, tuber, corm, etc. for at least 90 days. (Note: Use only what applies to your Flower Show.) 6 If containers are not provided by committee for cut specimens, schedule specifies type of container exhibitor must furnish. 7. The Committee reserves the right to subdivide by genus, species, cultivar, type, size or color. 8. Measure length of cut specimens from tip to cut end. Schedule should specify maximum length. 9. Cut specimens should not have any foliage below water line. (Exception: Gladioli) 10. If exhibitor is to provide wedging material, schedule specifies type, as sprig of evergreen, plug of wood, etc. Otherwise schedule states Committee will provide wedging. 11. Schedule should state space allotted each exhibit if appropriate, e.g. Collections and/or Displays. 12. Maximum size of pot for container grown plants is _____(size in inches). 13. Judging of horticultural specimens shall be according to the National Garden Clubs Horticulture Scales of Points listed in The Handbook for Flower Shows 2007 pp. 298-302 plus two new Scales of Points for Collections, approved April 2008. Page 6 Title of Flower Show Division II - Design Rules for Exhibitor 1. Fresh plant material may never be treated. Dried plant material may be treated. No artificial flowers, foliage, fruit or vegetables are permitted. 2. Some plant material must be used in every exhibit, but need not have been grown by exhibitor unless required by the schedule. 3. An exhibitor may enter as many classes as desired, but only one exhibit per class. Each class must have a minimum of four exhibits, but may have more than four. Each design must be the work of only one exhibitor (exception: Club Competition and Companion Classes). 4. The exhibitor will be responsible for filling the reserved space, maintaining the exhibit in show condition and providing a substitute if unable to participate. 5. Landscapes or scenes are not permitted in Design Division. 6. Living members of the Animal Kingdom and taxidermal representation of the same are not permitted in the Design Division. 7. Religious symbols used must be displayed in a respectful manner and in accordance with policies of local religious organizations. 8. The American flag and other national flags must be displayed in a respectful manner and may not be incorporated into any competitive designs, nor be used as underlays, swags or the like. 9. The schedule may prohibit other items if club wishes to do so; these are allowed unless prohibited by schedule or by law (subject to requirements of any NGC Top Exhibitor Award being offered.). See HB pp. 189-190. 10. Staging measurements, colors, props, plant material requirements if appropriate (unless such information is listed with each class) must be stated. 11. The space allotted each exhibit (unless space allotted is listed with each class) must be stated. 12. Eligible for Youth Awards Schedule controls youth participation in Standard Flower Show, refer to HB pp. 226-228. Horticulture, Design and Educational (if offered) are judged by adult Scale of Points, but receive their own ribbons as Youth are never in competition with adults. Suggested Youth division age groupings are: 1. Juniors, preschool through age seven, 2. Intermediate, ages eight through twelve, and 3. Advanced, ages thirteen through seventeen. Youth exhibits groups may be counted towards number of exhibits required for NGC Flower Show Achievement Award. If not judged, section is eligible for Award/s of Appreciation. SECTION C. Sponsored Groups Schedule controls definition of this group, refer to HB p. 229. Sponsored groups may be counted towards number of exhibits required for NGC Flower Show Achievement Award. If not judged, they may receive Award/s of Appreciation.. SECTION D. Gardens Schedule controls definitions and/or requirements for this section, refer to HB pp. 230-231. No specific Top Exhibitor Award is offered for Gardens, but the Club Competition Award may be offered to Gardens. Gardens may be counted towards number of exhibits required for NGC Flower Show Achievement Award. If not judged, may receive Award of Appreciation.
SECTION E. Artistic Crafts Artistic Crafts do not count toward NGC Flower Show Top Achievement Awards, but add interest and beauty to the Flower Show. Suggested Classes (see HB pp. 231-232 for additional suggestions): Class 1. Corsages Min 4 entries Class 2. Decorated Candles Min 4 entries Class 3. Straw Garden Hat decorated with fresh or dried plant materials, art, ribbons, etc. Min 4 entries SECTION F. Commercial Exhibits Usually only included in large shows; exhibits done by nursery, florist, garden shop, or other garden-related business, (space allowing and schedule controls requirements must be stated). See HB p. 233 for more information. They may receive Award/s of Appreciation. SECTION G. Invitational Exhibits A single exhibit or classes of exhibits entered upon special request of the show committee. See HB pp. 232-233 for more information. If not judged, they may be given an Award of Appreciation. No Top Exhibitor Award is available for Invitational Classes. SECTION H. Plant Exchange/Sale Plant exchanges or sales may be conducted during the show. See HB pp. 233-234 for more information and requirements.
Page 10-11-12 Title of Flower Show AWARD RULES Awards will be determined by the National Garden Club, Inc. Standard System of Judging. Only one first place (blue) ribbon per class or sub-class; must score 90 or more. Only one second place (red) ribbon per class or sub-class; must score 85 or more. Only one third place (yellow) ribbon per class or sub-class; must score 80 or more. One or more honorable mention (white) ribbons; must score 75 or more. (HB p 5) A design, other than a blue ribbon winner, scoring 90 or above will be identified on the entry card with the numbers “90+” and signed by an Accredited Judge. (HB p 6) HORTICULTURE AWARDS Horticulture Division Award Award of Horticultural Excellence: (rosette of green, orange, and blue ribbons) may be awarded ONLY to the CORRECT BOTANICALLY NAMED exhibit of FRESH PLANT MATERIAL judged as the finest in the entire Horticulture Division. Only one may be offered and awarded per show. It is possible that the exhibit may also win one of the other NCA Section Awards in the Horticulture Division. The exhibit must score 95 or more. (HB p 43)
Horticultural Section Awards Award of Merit (rosette of orange ribbons) is a SECTION award and may be awarded to a CORRECTLY BOTANICALLY NAMED blue ribbon winning exhibit scoring 95 or more of FRESH PLANT MATERIAL in Division I (Horticulture), Section (s) designating specimen eligible for this award. No more than 5 may be offered and awarded per show (HB p. 43). The Arboreal Award (rosette of two (2) values of green ribbons) is a SECTION award and may be awarded to the highest scoring CORRECTLY BOTANICALLY NAMED blue ribbon winner in Division I Section (s) designating specimen eligible for this award, and scoring 95 or more. Only one may be offered and awarded per show. (HB p 43) The Collectors Showcase Award (rosette of brown and green ribbons) is a SECTION award awarded to the highest scoring CORRECTLY BOTANICALLY NAMED blue ribbon winner in that section. Must score 95 or more. Two may be offered and awarded per show, (HB p 44) The Growers Choice Award (rosette of dark green ribbons) is a SECTION award awarded to the highest scoring CORRECTLY BOTANICALLY NAMED exhibit in a section for Container Grown Plants and Combination Plantings. Classes in each eligible Section must have some common characteristic, e.g. Flowering Container Grown. Must score 95 or more. No more than 3 may be offered and awarded per show (TNG Winter 2008 p 20)
DESIGN AWARDS Design Division Awards (only one may be offered per show) The Award of Design Excellence (rosette of gold ribbons) may be awarded to the highest scoring exhibit in the entire Design Division entered by a single exhibitor. (HB p 45) The Holiday Excellence Award (rosette of red ribbons) may be awarded ONLY to the exhibit judged the finest in the entire Design Division. Only one may be offered and awarded per show. Winning exhibit may also have won a Sectional Top Exhibitor Design Award. (HB p 46)
Design Section Awards The Tricolor Award (rosette combining blue, red and yellow ribbons) may be awarded to the highest scoring blue ribbon exhibit, scoring 95 or more for all classes designated as eligible. Two awards (one per section) may be offered and awarded. ALL PLANT MATERIAL USED IN DESIGN MUST BE FRESH but need not dominate unless required by schedule. (HB p 46) The Award of Distinction (rosette of brown ribbons) may be awarded to the highest scoring blue ribbon exhibit, scoring 95 or more for all classes designated eligible. Two awards (one per section) may be offered and awarded. ALL PLANT MATERIAL USED IN DESIGN MUST BE DRIED but need not dominate unless schedule requires. (HB p 47) The Designer's Choice Award (rosette of purple ribbons) may be awarded to the highest scoring blue ribbon exhibit, scoring 95 or more for all classes designated as eligible. Two awards (one per section) may be offered and awarded. Exhibitor must have complete freedom to choose components. Staging may be specified in the schedule but not its use. (HB p 47) The Table Artistry Award (rosette of burgundy ribbons) may be awarded to the highest scoring blue ribbon winning exhibit, scoring 95 or more for all classes designated eligible. Two awards (one per section) may be offered and awarded. Exhibitors are permitted a choice of fresh and/or dried plant materials and other components. (HB p 48) The Petite Award (small rosette of blue and white ribbons) may be awarded to the highest scoring blue ribbon exhibit, scoring 95 or more. May be offered and awarded in specified sections/s of a Small-Standard or Standard Flower Show. In sections eligible for the Petite Award, the schedule must specify the type of plant material (all fresh, all dried, etc.) to be used in each class or within the entire section. (HB p 49)
SPECIAL EXHIBITS AWARDS The Educational Award (rosette of brown and white ribbons) may be awarded to the highest scoring blue ribbon exhibit, scoring 95 or more, in Division III (Special Exhibits) for all exhibits designated as eligible. Only one may be offered per show. Must be a minimum of two (2) exhibits titled in schedule. (HB p 49) The Club Competition Award (a rosette of light blue ribbons) for competition among clubs or groups in major and/or advanced show. A maximum of three may be may be offered and awarded per show, one in Horticulture, one in Design and one in the Special Exhibits Division, Garden Section. A minimum of four exhibits in one class within a section designated for club competition is required. (HB p 52) The Youth Awards (various ribbons offered, see HB p 51) Youth classes are judged by adult scale of points but winning exhibits must score only 90 to win top awards. ADDITIONAL NGC AWARDS The Artistic Craft Award (rosette of navy ribbons with gold lettering) is awarded to the highest scoring blue ribbon exhibit, scoring 95 or more, in Division III. Some plant material must be included. Only one may be offered and awarded per show. (HB p 53)
The Award of Appreciation (rosette of orchid ribbons with gold lettering) may be given by the Flower Show Committee to Invitational, Commercial and other non-competitive exhibits if designated in the schedule. (HB p. 53)
Sweepstakes Award (rosette of green and white ribbons) Two may be given per show, one for most points or ribbons in Horticulture and one for most points or ribbons in Design. Tabulations are compiled by show committee using a pre-determined method given in the schedule. (HB p. 54) Best-in-Show Award (rosette of three blue ribbons) Two per show may be offered, one in Horticulture Division and one in Design Division; the Award may be offered in one division and not the other. Winning exhibit must score 90 or more. (HB p. 53) Special Award (rosette of yellow ribbons) may be presented in recognition of individual effort or contribution to the success of the show. No restriction on number to be awarded. Award winner/s are determined by the Club President or Show Committee in a manner of its choosing. Schedule need only state that Special Awards/s are being considered. Individuals making the selection should be listed (HB p 54) Regional, State and Local Awards may be given in addition to, or in place of Top Exhibitor Awards. Requirements must be given in schedule.
