Tolerable Upper Intake Level

Pronunciation TAH-luh-ruh-bul UH-per IN-tayk LEH-vul
Definition UL. The largest daily intake of a nutrient that is considered unlikely to cause harmful side effects for most people in a particular life stage and gender group. Taking more than the UL is not recommended and may be harmful. The amount is established by the Institute of Medicine. For example, the UL for vitamin A is 3,000 micrograms/day. Women who consume more than this amount every day shortly before or during pregnancy have an increased chance (risk) of giving birth to an infant with a birth defect.
