Grants for Management of Eurasian Watermilfoil

Program Purpose: To reduce the adverse affects of Eurasian Watermilfoil on recreational opportunities in Minnesota lakes and to slow the spread of the exotic to other lakes.

Eligible Projects: Projects that manage Eurasian Watermilfoil in common use areas of lakes and projects that control the spread of Eurasian Watermilfoil fragments in public boat access areas. Projects adjacent to private riparian property that primarily enhances the recreational opportunities of private riparian owners will not be reimbursed. Also, assessment of potential interference by milfoil with use of the lake may be eligible for reimbursement.

Who May Apply: Counties, cities, townships, and incorporated lake associations that own riparian property on lakes with Eurasian Watermilfoil and DNR designation.

Priorities: All lakes with Eurasian Watermilfoil that have at least one public access.

Level of Assistance: The maximum amount of funds for which an organization may apply to use for control on an individual lake is determined as follows. Lakes with less than 51 littoral acres are eligible to receive up to $2,000. Lakes with 51 to 100 littoral acres are eligible to receive up to $4,000. Lakes with 101 to 2,500 littoral acres are eligible to receive up to $4,000 plus $9.00 for each littoral acre in addition to the first 100. Lakes with more than 2,500 littoral acres are eligible to receive up to $1,200 plus $7.00 for each littoral acre in addition to the first 100.

General Information: This program was created in 1994 to address the rapid expansion of Eurasian Watermilfoil in Minnesota Lakes. Its primary goals are to manage nuisances and to slow the spread of the exotic to other lakes.
