Multistate Projects

A significant portion of U.S. publicly funded research on plant breeding, genetics, genomics, or genetic resources is linked in some way to one or more multistate projects. Multistate projects conduct, support, or coordinate research on high-priority topics among the state agricultural experiment stations (SAES) in partnership with CSREES, other research institutions and agencies, and the Cooperative Extension System. Opportunities and complex problem solving activities that are beyond the scope of a single SAES can be approached in a more efficient and comprehensive way through multistate projects. A complete list of all multistate projects on plant breeding, genetics, genomics, and genetic resources is available in PDF form.

Multistate projects are organized through the four regional associations of SAES directors:

However, multistate projects are not confined to a region and any SAES is free to participate in projects sponsored by any of the other regional associations.  Information on all current multistate projects is available online at the National Information Management and Support System (NIMSS).

Legislative Authority

The Agricultural Research, Extension, and Education Reform Act of 1998 (AREERA) gives CSREES the legislative authority to fund multistate research projects. According to this legislation, “Not less than 25 percent [of Hatch formula funding] shall be allotted to the States for cooperative research employing multidisciplinary approaches…to solve problems that concern more than one state.”
