National Plant Genome Initiative Stakeholder Meeting

The Interagency Working Group (IWG) on Plant Genomes of the National Science and Technology Council Committee on Science met with more than 80 stakeholders at the Beckman Center, Irvine, CA, August 26-28, 2008, to discuss the outcomes of the first 10 years of the National Plant Genome Initiative (NPGI), as well as the scientific challenges and opportunities ahead for the next five to 10 years.  Topics for discussion included an overview of the NPGI; grand challenges and the tool and technology needed to address them; translational genomics; bioinformatics and databases; environmental impacts; training needs and workforce demands; public-private partnerships; and international partnerships.  Sessions were led by IWG participants including Ed Kaleikau, CSREES; Judy St. John and Kay Simmons, Agricultural Research Service; Randy Johnson , Forest Service; Jim Collins, Machi Dilworth, Jane Silverthorne and Diane Okamura, National Science Foundation; and Sharlene Weatherwax, Department of Energy.  The workshop was organized by Dr. Joseph Ecker, Salk Institute for Biological Studies, San Diego , CA. Information from discussions will be used in conjunction with other input to develop future activities for the National Plant Genome Initiative.
