Over 11 million cargo containers arrive in the U.S. annually, carried on ships, trains, planes, and trucks. National security officials view cargo containers as a potential means for terrorists to smuggle weapons of mass destruction into the country. To protect against this threat, researchers at LLNL have collaborated with with Secure Box Corporation of Santa Clara, California, and the National Infrastructure Institute to develop a method to protect containers while in transit. SecureBox, a wireless device that can be installed within the metal corrugation of a cargo container, can accurately detect intrusions along any of a containers six walls.
