This report is from the first meeting of these legal experts, who are providing their time pro bono to GBIF. They provide key advice to GBIF on aspects of Intellectual Property Rights relevant to biodiversity data of the kinds available via the GBIF network.
This GBIF advisory group, called "PROLeg" (pro bono Legal Expert Group), is chaired by
Paul Uhlir.
At their meeting, held in September 2006 in Copenhagen, the experts discussed
- GBIF as a global public good
- Obligations and possible restrictions to users (including recommendations on the GBIF Data Sharing Agreement)
- Attribution to data providers
- Non-commercial requirements on users
- Enforcement mechanisms
- Barriers to the disclosure of data through the GBIF portal, and
- Legal risk management
They made recommendations to GBIF in their Report from that meeting.
The agenda and other documents from the PROLeg meeting are also available.
