As announced the week of 13 November 2006 in Nature, Science, and the New Scientist, the Global Biodiversity Information Facility (GBIF) is seeking a dynamic and visionary individual for the position of Executive Secretary. The position becomes vacant on 1 November 2007 when the founding Executive Secretary ends his term.
The Governing Board seeks a person of significant international standing to lead and deliver the GBIF mission. The Executive Secretary is accountable to the Governing Board of GBIF, and will be required to work with the participant countries, economies and organisations. The position has four key expectations:
- Working externally with a wide range of international stakeholders to ensure that benefits from data access and data mobilization are realised;
- Serving as the Director of the GBIF Secretariat, leading and managing a small professional international team, located in Copenhagen, Denmark;
- Developing the GBIF work programme and ensuring it is carried out;
- Developing strategic relationships that lead to a sustainable funding base for GBIF.
