This 2005 GBIF Demonstration Project call focuses on the development of applications and/or tools that utilize GBIF data and are in line with the GBIF Work Programme. GBIF intends to use the demonstration projects to promote GBIF, expand its membership and assist in catalyzing fund raising efforts.
The goal is to fund practical, useful, replicable, scalable and easy to use applications that showcase new approaches to GBIF's target audiences, and in a clear and user-friendly manner show the importance and usefulness of the GBIF concept and philosophy.
Target audiences include scientific and research institutions, students, governmental and non-governmental institutions, conservation organizations, and policy- and decision-makers.
The project must address a theme of high impact and high visibility and be able to actively persuade people on the advantages of joining and benefiting from GBIF. The demo should show in a practical manner how data from species and specimens can be utilized for scientific and/or practical applications, including important national and international topics (e.g. the 2010 initiative to decrease the rate of biodiversity loss, the Global Taxonomy Initiative, the Global Strategy for Plant Conservation and issues such as biodiversity conservation, pollinators, alien invasive species, pest management, marine biodiversity, sustainable agriculture for global food security, understanding of emerging diseases and changing environments as a result of land use change or global climate change, etc.)
