The Global Biodiversity Information Facility (GBIF) Secretariat is seeking a motivated individual to join our small team of software developers working at our offices in Copenhagen, Denmark.

GBIF is a multilateral initiative designed to facilitate access to and sharing of data relating to the world's biodiversity via a global network of institutions and organisations. The Secretariat has designed and operates a web portal (http://data.gbif.org/) that facilitates access to these data.

The Secretariat informatics team is responsible for:

  • Maintenance and continuing development of the web portal in response to user needs
  • Developing and supporting multiple tools and standards allowing data providers to connect their data to the network
  • General IT development support to optimise the operations of the Secretariat

The GBIF Secretariat is seeking a software developer to augment this team. The individual should:

  • Have significant experience (at least 3 years) developing web applications using Java technologies, particularly Tomcat, Hibernate, Spring and Velocity
  • Have significant experience (at least 3 years) in the use of XML technologies, particularly XML schema, XPath and XSLT
  • Have experience in developing solutions using very large databases, particularly using MySQL
  • Be self-motivated and able to contribute constructively to a small team
  • Be comfortable working in a fluid, changing environment

Familiarity with the following areas will also be beneficial:

  • The standards and protocols developed by the Taxonomic Databases Working Group
  • The development of GIS solutions, particularly based on open standards
  • The development of semantic web applications using RDF and OWL
  • Authentication frameworks, particularly using LDAP
  • Any of the following additional programming languages: PHP, Python, Perl
  • The world of biodiversity information, including taxonomy, collection management, conservation science, etc.

This is an exciting opportunity to work on a major international project using open source tools and standards and to play a part in increasing our understanding and management of the natural world.

The post is available for a period of 3-5 years starting in January 2008 or as soon as possible thereafter.

Salary and benefits are competitive.

Any potential applicant is invited to apply, irrespective of age, sex, race, religion, nationality or ethnic background.

Applicants should submit:

  1. A cover letter addressing explicitly how you match the listed requirements/qualifications for the position,
  2. A detailed curriculum vitae,
  3. Names and addresses of three referees.

Applications should be submitted in English by e-mail to wd_applications@gbif.org.

The closing date for applications is midnight on Sunday 28 October 2007. By 3 November 2007 we will notify you on the outcome of the first pre-selection (to be invited or not for an interview).

Interviews are expected to take place in Copenhagen in early to mid November 2007.

Questions about the position should be directed to Donald Hobern, Deputy Director for Informatics, at dhobern@gbif.org
