WHC Awards

WHC’s prestigious International Conservation Awards recognize voluntary activities by individuals, companies and organizations, large or small, private or non-profit, who demonstrate excellence in the areas of wildlife habitat enhancement and restoration. Our recipients also show that employing exemplary practices and approaches to protecting natural resources and environment also promotes significant economic benefits. Each volunteer that contributes to WHC’s corporate habitat programs, demonstrates exceptional commitment or innovation above and beyond their company/organization’s primary environmental stewardship goals. Rod R. Blagojevich, Governor of the State of Illinois, proclaimed February 11, 2006, as Unimin Corporate Conservation Awareness Day in recognition of Unimin Corporation for their unwavering commitment and numerous contributions to environmental stewardship and native biodiversity, and in support of the efforts of all our corporate partners as we strive towards preservation through action, education and leadership.

Unimin distinguished themselves by winning WHC's coveted 2005 Corporate Habitat of the Year award, which goes to one recertified program each year. This is the second time Unimin has been honored with this award, having previously won it in 2002. The Illinois Department Natural Resources presented Unimin with its Habitat Conservation Award for their ongoing commitment to environmental stewardship.

The Tamms/Elco Plant is located on 2,000 acres in Alexander County in southern Illinois. Employees and volunteers take advantage of the opportunities created by the site’s mining and reclamation program to incorporate wildlife management projects for an incredible diversity of native species across 1,950 acres and extensive education efforts are also undertaken by Unimin employees to teach school children about the components of the wildlife program.

The Corporate Habitat of the Year award goes to one re-certified site each year. Each year, the winner is presented with the solid bronze osprey statue, at the Annual Symposium, to take back to their site to display for one year. The osprey (Pandion haliaetus) was commissioned by WHC in 1994 by local Maryland wildlife artist, Walter T. Matia. The migratory raptor is symbolic of WHC’s mission to protect and enhance species through beneficial management techniques, as a bird that was once declining in numbers.
